At Journal Square Urby, artistic expression comes to life with Felipe Pantone’s monumental mural, OPTICHROMIE for Jersey City. This vibrant, 15,680-square-foot masterpiece marks Pantone’s largest and most ambitious project to date, adorning the 25-story façade of the building. Featuring his signature geometric patterns, gradients, and bright colors, the mural stands in vivid contrast to the subdued hues of the surrounding cityscape, creating a dynamic visual sight that enhances the skyline.
The creation of OPTICHROMIE for Jersey City was a feat of artistic vision and logistical coordination. Over 25 days, Pantone and his team of five artists worked diligently to bring the mural to life, overcoming challenges such as adverse weather, cold temperatures, and even earthquakes. Using two nine-meter-long swing stages, the team applied over 170 gallons of paint, combining rollers and airless sprayers to achieve the intricate designs and gradients that characterize Pantone's work.
This monumental artwork is not only a testament to Pantone’s creativity and resilience, but also highlights Urby’s commitment to integrating art into urban living. The mural embodies Urby’s vision of blending thoughtful artistic elements with a strong connection to the surrounding community, while leaving a lasting, colorful mark on the Jersey City skyline.
In reflecting on the scale and challenges of the project, Pantone shared, “The effort required was immense, both physically and mentally. Enduring so many days in front of the same project with all the challenges was tough, but seeing it finished makes it all worth it.” OPTICHROMIE for Jersey City is a bold expression of creativity, collaboration, and perseverance, underscoring Urby’s dedication to transforming spaces into innovative, inspiring environments for both residents and the broader city landscape.
